The best places to go skiing – the top 5 ski resorts worldwide

So winter is practically upon us and what better way to make use of the freezing temperatures and snow-covered ground than by going skiing? If you’re not sure of where to make the most of this winter sport then take a look at this list for some tips!

Aspen, Colorado
This ski area is comprised of four separate mountains, each with their own distinct character. The four ski areas offer more than 5,000 acres of terrain. The main mountain (Ajax) can be reached by a gondola from the centre of town. Here you’ll find steep black runs as well as long blue runs so there’s lots of variety. The other three areas can be reached by bus. Buttermilk is one of the mountains and is perfect for beginners and is also where the Winter X-Games has been held annually since 2002.  A lot of people compare Ski Utah Resorts to CO.  Which state’s resorts do you like better?

Zermatt, Switzerland
Zermatt caters for everyone so whether you’re an experienced skier travelling with friends, or you’re wanting to learn how to ski or to teach your family, this is the place for you. The mountain village is nestled in between steeply scarped mountains and is dominated by the Matterhorn, which stands at 4,478 metres. The resort is very popular and sees up to 20,000 guests during the winter high season. Zermatt is actually car-free to prevent pollution so you can enjoy your skiing experience knowing that you’re breathing some of the cleanest and freshest air you’ve ever breathed.

Courchevel, France
The Courchevel ski resort is part of Les Trois Vallées, which is the largest linked ski area in the world. It has access to 600km of downhill skiing with 497 individual pistes, served by 200 ski lifts. Courchevel caters to everyone so whether your level is beginner, intermediate or advanced you’ll find something here. The resort even has the biggest number of instructors (over 1,000) in the world! The ski area is exceptionally beautiful as it has one of the highest tree-lines in the Alps (at 2,300 metres).

Heavenly Mountain Resort, Tahoe
This ski resort is located on the California-Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe. There are 97 runs and 30 ski lifts. The resort boasts 4,800 acres of ski and snowboard terrain. The resort receives quite a lot of snowfall and also has one of America’s largest snowmaking systems, which means that the snow season can run from mid November to mid April. The views of Lake Tahoe and Sierra Nevada are breathtaking and there’s even an observation deck where you can make the most of these views.

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy
Cortina is located in a wide sunny valley in the Dolomites area of Italy, which is near the border to Austria. It was also host to the 1956 Winter Olympics. Cortina is part of the Dolomiti Superski area with access to 668 individual pistes. This resort caters for everyone, but intermediate level skiers have more choice of slopes, including the 3.7 mile long descent towards Armentarola. There are 42 blue pistes compared to 8 black pistes and 19 red pistes. Beginners can learn at the ski school in Guargne-Mietres or just have a go on the nursery slopes.
