Green Car Rental

Sometimes you just feel bad about renting a car.  You know there’s environmental impact, but you’ve got to get where your going for business.  So what’s one to do?

Well, some companies are making it a bit easier to be environmentally friendly when renting a car.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Enterprise customers can pay $1.25 per car rental to fund carbon offset projects.  The bonus is Enterprise will match your donation dollar-per-dollar, up to $1 million/year.  Enterprise has also heard the customer feedback for more hybrids, and is buying more hybrids for their rental fleet.

Kayak is doing it’s part by including a search filter where you can search for only hybrid vehicles to rent.  But just so you know, reserving a hybrid car from rental agencies can be difficult.  Some cities like New York or LA seem to have a higher percentage of rental fleets made up by hybrids.  Other cities like Dallas for example don’t seem to have a hybrid rental available in the whole town.  This is an exaggeration of course, but you get the picture.

Kayak also has a search filter for miles per gallon.  So if you can’t get that hybrid, you can at least get a car with a high MPG.

Vroom is an Australian company that helps users find low rates on car rentals.  Vroom will offset the rentals carbon emissions by making a contribution to the carbon Neutral Company, which makes investments in wind farms.  Vroom does this at no extra cost to you, which is great.
