Keep Your Hands off the Hotel Maids! Enough Already.

C’mon guys, keep your hands off the hotel maids!  Enough already.

Just because she’s in your bedroom doesn’t mean she’s available for adult bedroom activities.  Just because her English may not be perfect doesn’t mean she doesn’t have rights.

Everyone heard about the Dominique Strauss-Kahn, now former IMF chief, scandal.  Unfortunately, there’s been another sexual assault accusation in NYC.

New York police arrested Egyptian banker Mahmoud Abdel Salam Omar on a charge of sexually assaulting a hotel maid.  The incident happened at the luxury UES hotel The Pierre.  Apparently Mahmoud requested tissues be delivered to his room.  When the maid delivered them, he locked her in his room and groped and “gyrated” against her.

He should have just used the tissues to, well, take care of himself post the maid leaving.

It’s getting so bad that the Hotel and Motel Trades Council, which represents 29,000 hotel employees, may request that every housekeeper be given a panic button to carry while working.

If you’re a business traveler, remember to act professionally.  You may think what occurs in the privacy of your hotel bedroom, 100’s or 1000’s of miles away from the office, won’t affect your job.  Think again.  A lot of companies will fire, with cause, an employee that gets caught acting inappropriately like the two examples above.

Penelope Trunk, a highly followed and respected career blogger, had an interesting take on the hotel maid sexual assaults.

It used to be that women with low-level jobs did not have the socioeconomic backing to stand up for themselves in the face of harassment. Today, women feel more empowered—even women in a low pay-grade. And women across the economic spectrum can identify what crosses the line.

These women have nothing to lose when they report men who cross the line sexually. So the maid reported. And then, it turns out, all sorts of women in higher up positions spoke up against Strauss-Kahn. The women wouldn’t report the harassment on their own. They don’t want to suffer retribution. But now there will be no retribution, so it’s safe to come forward.

If you’re a pig that’s used to getting away with sexually harassing women at the office who then have to keep their mouths shut if they want to keep climbing the ladder – you better be careful.

God help you if you harasses a woman with nothing to lose like a hotel maid.  You may just get what you have coming to you.

If you really have to take care of your carnal interests while on the road, hire a willing, discreet professional.  Keep your hands off the hotel maids, etc.  Seriously.
